BLEEDING

BLEEDING

At some point in our lives we all bleed, it maybe something as simple as a paper cut, or accidently pricking our finger with a pin, and normally these are easy to deal with.

But sometimes bleeding can become serious and even life threatening, then time and suitable first-aid measures become very important. Everyone should learn what to do and be prepared with suitable bandages to stop severe bleeding if an accident occurs.

The hardest type of bleeding to spot and treat is Internal Bleeding, in cases where this is suspected it is important to get hospital attention immediately.

WHAT SHOULD I DO ?

THE PRIORITY IS TO STOP THE BLEEDING !

Although we need to consider infection, actually stopping the bleed is far more important as an immediate first-aid measure, infections can be treated at the hospital, but severe blood loss can kill.

Even with a relatively small wound the patient can suffer from shock, so once bleeding is under control keep them warm, reassure and keep them still.

Never give hot drinks or alcohol, they need an anaesthetic for an operation.

SELF HARM INJURIES

IT IS NOT AN ATTEMPT AT SUICIDE!

Self harm is very complex and often misunderstood.

First-aid treatment for bleeding, is the same as listed in the sections above.

BUT

Treatment for self harm injuries to a conscious patient must only be given when asked for and permission has been given by the self-harmer, otherwise it is classed as Assault.

LEARNING FIRST AID

Many of us are now taught First-Aid as a requirement for work, and it is law to have a qualified first-aider in any office, factory or workspace that has more than five persons.

But as parents we should learn first-aid in case something happens to our children at home, on way to and from school or at the park.

Basic and advanced courses are cheap and regularly run by both the St. John Ambulance and the Red Cross.  (see buttons below)

Everyone should learn basic first-aid, it could save a life !
