FITS, SEIZURES & CONVULSIONS

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES ?

DEFINITION:
A seizure is defined as an abnormal, disorderly discharging of the brain's nerve cells, resulting in a temporary disturbance of motor, sensory, or mental function.

When we hear words such as 'Fits' or 'Seizures' we immediately tend to think of Epilepsy and Diabetes, but there are also many other things that can also cause the brain to react this way such as:-  Head Injuries, Alcohol Poisoning, Pre-Eclampsia in pregnancy, reactions to medication, use of narcotic drugs, Brain Tumours, Sudden low blood pressure, excessive tiredness and lack of sleep, Stress & Anxiety, reactions to certain foods, following a stroke, Menningitis, through other illnesses and infections, Decompression Sickness (bends),  Low Oxygenation levels, post anaesthesia, Overheating, or Heatstroke.

LEARNING FIRST AID

Many of us are now taught First-Aid as a requirement for work, and it is law to have a qualified first-aider in any office, factory or workspace that has more than five persons.

But as parents we should learn first-aid in case something happens to our children at home, on way to and from school or at the park.

Basic and advanced courses are cheap and regularly run by both the St. John Ambulance and the Red Cross.  (see buttons below)

Everyone should learn basic first-aid, it could save a life !
