POISONING CAN BE INTENTIONAL OR UNINTENTIONAL
Poisoning is an illness caused by eating, drinking, or breathing a dangerous substance:
This could be intentional as in drug overdoses, suicide attempts or by acts of murder. Or it can be unintentional by being exposed to a chemical accident, radiation, act of war, eating or drinking or otherwise ingesting unfit, contaminated or incorrectly cooked or stored foodstuffs or chemicals, or accidently eating a food which the patient is allergic to. Or by exposure to bacteria such as campylobacter, salmonella, Escherichia coli or Norovirus.
Knowing the type of poison is very important when it comes to medical treatment, where possible send the product to the Hospital where they can call the National Poisons Unit who hold detailed records of every product on sale in the UK, finding out the contents, mixture ratios and how to treat.
Common causes of poisoning include: Household cleaning agents, Detergents, Cosmetic items, Plants and Fungi, Pesticides, Carbon Monoxide, Alcohol, Drugs and Medications, Fuels, Antifreeze, Acids, Animal Bites & Stings, Biological agents, Infected animal products, cross-contamination of foodstuffs, infected water supplies, Lead, Radiation.
The methods used vary depending on the size and age of the patient.

The sale of foodstuffs in the UK wether cooked or raw is highly controlled by the food standards agency, so is the environment of storage, preparation and sales to the public. Sometimes these regulations are ignored or mis-understood, leading to the sale of consumables which is not fit for purpose or sold in unhygeinic environments.
If you have become subject to food poisoning after eating in a premises that was unfit, you should report it so that the supplier and premises are investigated. This can be done via the button below or via your GP who is legally required to report certain cases of food poisoning to the Environmental Health Department.
