The way we cook while camping will vary a lot due to the situation, if on a proper campsite in a tent or caravan that has an electric hook-up then we have the options of using electric ovens and microwaves. But if camping away from these sites we may have to resort to Gas stoves, gas ovens or even cooking over a fire. It also depends on your ability to carry equipment, if camping solo on a mountainside, then the amount of equipment you can carry will be minimal.
I have fond memories of camping as a child in Cornwall, a row of wax cotton Ridge tents, ropes strung between and tarpaulin's strung over the top to make a cooking area. My Grandfather collecting the empty square ice-cream tins from the ice cream van at the beach, tying them together, laid on their side in a 3x 3 block. Collecting scrap wood and anything that could burn, to put in the lowest row with the pieces of coal he had brought from home. With the fires in the lower row, he cooked our meals in the middle and top 'ovens', while warming the plates in the top. Sometimes he would remove the center one of the middle row so he could boil the kettle or pot of potatoes. Not a gas bottle in sight, but the food always tasted amazing.
Below are some examples of what equipment is currently available, new innovative ideas, and examples of DIY cooking equipment. If you have your own design or method, then please email it to us for inclusion so that we can share it with others.
